The Public Service Commission, West Bengal (WBPSC) has released the official scheme and syllabus for the Clerkship Examination 2024 under Advertisement No. 12/2024. The exam has two written parts: Part-I is an objective MCQ test (100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes) covering English, General Studies and Arithmetic, followed by Part-II, a written conventional test (100 marks, 60 minutes) covering English and a regional language. Candidates who qualify in both parts are then assessed on computer operation and typing. The standard of the examination is similar to that of the Madhyamik Examination of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.
Important Note: Three things every candidate must know before starting preparation. First, the standard is Madhyamik (Class 9-10). Candidates who over-prepare advanced material waste time — master Class 9-10 English, Arithmetic and General Knowledge first. Second, Part-II is a written conventional test (not MCQ). You will draft reports, write precis and do translations by hand within 60 minutes. Practise writing speed and structure, not just knowledge. Third, the official syllabus does not specify negative marking or qualifying marks. Do not assume – check the official notification at psc.wb.gov.in before the exam.

How to Prepare for WBPSC Clerkship Exam 2026
Six preparation steps based on the exam pattern and syllabus:
- Build everything at Madhyamik (Class 9-10) standard first. Revise West Bengal Board Class 9-10 English, basic Arithmetic and Indian History and Geography before moving to any advanced material. The questions are set at this level.
- Practise Arithmetic daily with all 13 topics. General Studies (40M) and Arithmetic (30M) together make up 70 out of 100 marks in Part-I. Arithmetic is predictable — cover all listed topics thoroughly.
- For English in Part-I, focus on grammar, synonyms and antonyms, correct usage and sentence structure at Madhyamik level.
- For General Studies, read current events with special focus on India, and cover Indian History and Geography at an elementary level. WB-specific current events are also relevant.
- Practise Part-II writing by hand under time pressure. Part-II is 100 marks in just 60 minutes — 50 minutes for Group-A (English) and 10 minutes per task. Practise report drafting (from bullet points), precis writing and English-Bengali/Hindi translation within strict time limits.
- Start basic computer skills and typing practice early. The typing and computer assessment comes last but catching up at the end is stressful. Regular practice of 15-20 minutes per day keeps you ready.
