NICL AO Syllabus 2026 - Prelims and Mains Exam Pattern - Subject-wise Topics and Negative Marking

The National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) has released the syllabus for Administrative Officer (Scale-I) Recruitment 2026 covering Generalist (200 posts) and Specialist (121 posts) streams. The selection process has three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination and Interview. The Prelims paper has 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes with sectional timing. The Mains objective paper carries 250 marks in 180 minutes, with a separate 30-mark English Descriptive Test. Negative marking of 0.25 mark per wrong objective answer applies in both Prelims and Mains. The Prelims exam is on 17 November 2026 and Mains on 22 December 2026.

Important Note: Three things every candidate must know before starting preparation. First, sectional timing is strict in Prelims — 20 minutes each for English, Reasoning and Quant. You cannot carry over unused time from one section to another. Practise each section within 20 minutes consistently. Second, the Generalist Mains and Specialist Mains have different patterns. Generalist Mains has five sections (250 questions). Specialist Mains has six sections including a 50-mark Technical or Professional Knowledge paper. Know which stream you applied for before you start Mains preparation. Third, the final merit for selection is based on Mains (80%) and Interview (20%) combined. Prelims is only a qualifying/screening stage.

NICL AO Selection Process and Final Merit

StageDetails
Phase I – PrelimsOnline objective, 100M, 60 min. Screening only.
Phase II – MainsOnline objective (250M, 180 min) + English Descriptive (30M, 30 min).
Phase III – InterviewShortlisted Mains candidates.
Final MeritMains objective score (80%) + Interview score (20%)

Negative Marking

0.25 mark (one-fourth) is deducted for each incorrect objective answer in both Prelims and Mains. There is no negative marking in the Descriptive Test.

Strategy tip: In Prelims with sectional timing, avoid guessing. In a 20-minute section, one wrong answer costs you 0.25 mark and also uses your limited time. Attempt only questions you are reasonably sure about.

Key Preparation Tips

  1. Prelims sectional timing is the biggest challenge. Practise each section (English, Reasoning, Quant) separately within 20 minutes before attempting full mocks.
  2. General Awareness for Mains must include Insurance Awareness and NICL-specific developments — this is a differentiator from banking exams. Follow insurance industry news, IRDAI developments and NICL announcements.
  3. Quantitative Aptitude in Mains is heavily DI-focused. Solve diverse DI sets (tables, pie charts, bar graphs, mixed and caselets) daily.
  4. English Descriptive (Essay, Precis, Comprehension) needs specific practice. Set a 30-minute timer: 10 minutes per component. Practice typing as well as content.
  5. Specialist candidates must prepare the Technical or Professional Knowledge paper deeply — it is 50 marks and discipline-specific with no generic shortcut.
  6. Final merit = Mains 80% + Interview 20%. Mains preparation is paramount. Even a strong interview cannot compensate for a weak Mains score.
