The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, have officially released Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) No. 04/2026 for 3,993 vacancies across 37 post categories of Junior Engineer (JE) and Depot Material Superintendent (DMS). This is one of the biggest engineering recruitment drives under Indian Railways in recent years, covering all four major engineering disciplines – Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Electronics – across 21 RRBs and their allotted Railway Zones and Production Units. Diploma and Degree engineers aged 18 to 33 years can apply online at rrbapply.gov.in from 14 August 2026 to 13 September 2026 (23:59 hrs). Pay Level 6 with initial pay of Rs. 35,400 per month.

Submitting more than one application – whether to different RRBs or multiple applications to the same RRB – will result in rejection of ALL your applications and debarment from future RRB/RRC examinations. Educational Qualification:

Candidates must possess the prescribed qualification ON OR BEFORE the closing date of application (13 September 2026). Candidates whose results are still awaited are NOT eligible.

A candidate who holds qualifications mapped to more than one Exam Group must choose only ONE Exam Group at the time of application and can only apply for posts mapped to that chosen group. DMS candidates whose diploma is not in the above chart must pick one of the listed Exam Groups during registration.

Citizenship: Candidates must be Indian citizens or belong to specified eligible categories (citizens of Nepal/Bhutan, persons of Indian origin from specified countries) as per Government of India rules, with a Certificate of Eligibility from the Government of India where applicable.

Fee refund important notes:

  • Fee refund is credited to the Aadhaar-seeded bank account only. Candidates must provide correct bank account details (bank name, account holder name, account number, IFSC code) in the application form. Incorrect or incomplete bank details will result in no refund.
  • Fee is NOT refunded to candidates who do not appear in the 1st Stage CBT, irrespective of reason.
  • Fee payment can be made via internet banking, debit card, credit card or UPI through the online payment gateway.

Selection involves four stages: 1st Stage CBT, 2nd Stage CBT, Document Verification and Medical Examination.

Stage 3 – Document Verification:

  • Candidates are called equal to the number of notified vacancies, in order of merit from 2nd Stage CBT
  • Original certificates and two sets of self-attested photocopies must be produced
  • Government/PSU employees must produce NOC from their employer at the DV stage

Stage 4 – Medical Examination:

  • Post-specific medical standards (A-3, B-1, B-2 or C-1) apply
  • Candidates found medically unfit for their opted post will NOT be offered any alternative appointment
  • There is no provision for alternative post allotment on medical grounds

How to Apply for RRB JE CEN 04/2026

  1. Visit the official RRB portal at rrbapply.gov.in and select the CEN No. 04/2026 application link.
  2. Create an Account using a valid personal mobile number and email ID – or use existing login credentials if you already have a registered account from an earlier RRB CEN. Enter account details with absolute care as NO corrections are permitted after account creation. Your mobile number, email ID and chosen RRB are permanently locked at this stage.
  3. Optionally authenticate your identity using DigiLocker or Aadhaar at the account creation stage for smoother verification during later stages.
  4. In the application form, select only one RRB and indicate your order of preference for Railway Zones/Production Units. Select your preferred posts/categories and your Exam Group.
  5. Fill in all personal and educational details accurately. Select your medium of examination.
  6. Capture a LIVE photograph through the application portal using a webcam or front camera – pre-existing or uploaded photographs are NOT accepted. Upload your signature in JPG/JPEG format (30 KB to 49 KB) as per specifications.
  7. SC/ST candidates who wish to claim a free Sleeper Class rail travel pass for CBT, DV and Medical Examination stages must upload their SC/ST certificate in PDF format (under 400 KB) at this step.
  8. Pay the examination fee online through internet banking, debit/credit card or UPI. Note your bank account details carefully for the fee refund process.
  9. Submit the application before 23:59 hrs on 13 September 2026. Note down your Registration Number. Fee payment can be completed until 15 September 2026.
  10. If any correction is required in submitted fields (except account details and chosen RRB), use the modification window from 16 to 25 September 2026 on payment of Rs. 250 per occasion.
  11. Candidates eligible for scribe assistance must separately submit their scribe details through the online portal between 26 and 30 September 2026.

Important Instructions

  • Only ONE application per candidate is permitted under CEN 04/2026. Applying to more than one RRB, or submitting multiple applications to the same RRB, leads to rejection of ALL applications and debarment from future RRB/RRC examinations.
  • Mobile number, email ID and chosen RRB entered at account creation are permanently locked and cannot be changed at any stage, including during the modification window.
  • Candidates must possess the prescribed educational qualification on or before the closing date of application (13 September 2026). Those whose final results are awaited are NOT eligible.
  • Negative marking of 1/3rd mark applies at both stages of the CBT. Attempting questions you are not sure of will reduce your score. Unanswered questions carry zero marks.
  • A virtual calculator is provided on screen during 2nd Stage CBT. No physical calculator, log table or electronic device is permitted inside the examination hall.
  • Biometric details (fingerprint and photograph) are recorded at every stage of the recruitment process. Impersonation will lead to immediate disqualification, debarment and legal action.
  • Candidates found medically unfit for their opted post/category at the Medical Examination stage will NOT be given any alternative appointment at any other post under this or any other CEN.
  • Once empanelled against a specific post, department and Railway/Production Unit, a candidate forfeits the right to be considered for any other post or category within the same Pay Level under this CEN.
  • The fee refund of Rs. 400 (General/OBC-NCL/EWS) or Rs. 250 (concession category) is credited ONLY to the Aadhaar-seeded bank account after appearing in 1st Stage CBT. Candidates who do not appear in CBT-1 will not receive any refund.
  • RRBs reserve the right to cancel, modify or reschedule any stage of this recruitment and to revise vacancy numbers at any point.
  • SC/ST candidates are eligible for a free Sleeper Class rail travel pass for appearing in CBT, DV and Medical Examination stages, subject to uploading a valid SC/ST certificate in the application.
  • Use of unfair means, submission of false information or impersonation will result in lifetime debarment from all RRB/RRC examinations and may lead to criminal prosecution.
  • Request for change of examination centre, date or shift will not be entertained under any circumstances once allotted.

Q8. What is the selection process for RRB JE 2026?
Four stages – 1st Stage CBT (100 marks, 90 minutes, screening), 2nd Stage CBT (150 marks, 120 minutes, discipline-specific), Document Verification and Medical Examination. The 1st Stage CBT shortlists candidates at 15 times the vacancy for the 2nd Stage. Final empanelment is based on 2nd Stage CBT merit, post preferences and medical fitness.

Q9. Can I apply to more than one RRB?
No. Only one application to one RRB is permitted under this CEN. Submitting multiple applications to different RRBs or more than one application to the same RRB leads to rejection of ALL applications and debarment from future RRB/RRC examinations. This rule is strictly enforced.

Q10. Can I change my chosen RRB or account details after submitting the application?
No. The mobile number, email ID and chosen RRB entered at account creation are permanently locked and cannot be modified at any stage, even during the modification window. Only other application fields can be modified during the window (16 to 25 September 2026) on payment of Rs. 250 per occasion.
