HPRCA Pharmacist Syllabus 2026: Part 1 – Subject-Wise Topics

A. Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Errors and types of errors, accuracy, precision and significant figures. Pharmacopoeia – Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP), British Pharmacopoeia (BP), United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and National Formulary (NF). Impurities and limit tests: Chloride, Sulphate, Iron, Arsenic, Lead and Heavy metals. Titrimetric analysis: acid-base titrations and indicators, non-aqueous titrations, precipitation titrations (Mohr’s, Volhard’s, Modified Volhard’s, Fajans), complexometric titrations, gravimetry and redox titrations. Pharmaceutical formulations including dental products, haematinics, gastrointestinal agents, topical agents, medicinal gases and heterocyclic chemistry. Classification, nomenclature, mechanism of action and medicinal uses of major drug classes: local and general anaesthetics, sedatives and hypnotics, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, adrenergic agents, cholinergic agents, antihypertensives, antidiabetics, analgesics, antibiotics, antivirals and antineoplastic agents.

B. Biochemistry

Cell structure and organization. Biological oxidation: electron transport chain, oxidative phosphorylation and inhibitors. Carbohydrate metabolism: structure and classification, glycolysis and citric acid cycle. Lipid metabolism: structure, beta-oxidation and ketogenesis. Protein and amino acid metabolism: transamination, deamination and the urea cycle. Metabolic disorders: phenylketonuria, albinism, alkaptonuria and jaundice. Enzymes: classification, inhibitors, therapeutic and diagnostic applications. Nucleic acids: DNA and RNA structure and function. Vitamins: classification, coenzymes and deficiency diseases. Qualitative tests for carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.

C. Pharmacotherapeutics and Pathophysiology

General introduction to pharmacotherapeutics, Essential Medicines List (EML) and Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs). Etiopathogenesis, clinical manifestations and management of: hypertension, angina, myocardial infarction, hyperlipidaemia, congestive heart failure, asthma, COPD, diabetes mellitus, thyroid disorders, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, migraine, GERD, peptic ulcer disease, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), anaemias, tuberculosis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections (UTIs), hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, malaria, viral infections, HIV/AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriasis, eczema, depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis, glaucoma, PCOS, dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

D. Human Anatomy and Physiology

Basic anatomical terminologies and cellular and tissue level organization. Gross anatomy and physiology of the osseous system, haemopoietic system, lymphatic system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, skeletal muscle system, nervous system, sensory organs, urinary system, endocrine system and reproductive system. Haematological diseases.

E. Pharmacology

General pharmacology: routes of drug administration, absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME), bioavailability and biotransformation, pharmacodynamics, drug-receptor interactions and dose-response relationships. Detailed pharmacology of drugs acting on: the peripheral nervous system (adrenergic, cholinergic, neuromuscular), the central nervous system (sedatives, anaesthetics, antipsychotics, antiepileptics), the cardiovascular system, the kidney (diuretics), the gastrointestinal tract, blood (anticoagulants, haematinics), the respiratory tract. Chemotherapeutic agents: penicillins, cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, tetracyclines, sulphonamides, antitubercular drugs, antifungals, antivirals, antimalarials and antineoplastic drugs. Autocoids, hormones and hormone antagonists.

F. Pharmaceutics

Dosage forms and their classification. Prescription writing and prescription errors. Packaging materials and pharmaceutical aids. Preservatives and their use in formulations. Unit operations: size reduction, size separation, mixing, filtration, evaporation, drying, extraction, distillation and centrifugation. Manufacturing of tablets, capsules, liquid dosage forms, topical preparations, nasal and ear preparations, powders, granules and sterile formulations. Quality assurance and quality control. GLP, cGMP, pilot plant studies and scale-up techniques. Calibration and validation procedures. Regulatory requirements for drug approval.

G. Pharmacognosy

Definition, history and scope of pharmacognosy. Classification and adulteration of natural drugs. Evaluation methods (organoleptic, microscopical, chemical, biological and physical). Phytoconstituents: alkaloids, terpenoids, glycosides, volatile oils, tannins and resins. Crude drugs used as laxatives, cardiotonics, antihypertensives, antitussives, antirheumatics, antidiabetics, diuretics, antiseptics and antimalarials. Plant fibres used as surgical dressings. Pharmacognosy in Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy systems. Herbal formulations, herb-drug interactions, herbal cosmetics and nutraceuticals.

H. Social Pharmacy

Role of pharmacists in public health. Concept of health and disease. Nutrition: macronutrients and micronutrients, malnutrition and dietary supplements. Epidemiology: epidemic, pandemic, endemic, morbidity and mortality. Communicable diseases and the role of pharmacists in public education. National health programmes: HIV/AIDS Control Programme, Revised National TB Control Programme, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Leprosy Control Programme, National Mental Health Programme, Universal Immunization Programme and Pulse Polio Programme.

I. Dispensing, Hospital and Clinical/Community Pharmacy

Hospital pharmacy: organization, functions and committees. Compounding and dispensing. Drug distribution systems in hospitals. Inventory management and procurement. Radiopharmaceuticals: basic concepts and handling. Clinical pharmacy functions: drug therapy monitoring, pharmacokinetics in practice. OTC sales and self-medication. Clinical laboratory tests: interpretation and significance. Poisoning and antidotes. Pharmacovigilance and adverse drug reaction (ADR) monitoring. Medication errors: LASA (Look-Alike, Sound-Alike) drugs and Tallman lettering. Community pharmacy practice including patient counselling, medication adherence, health promotion and disease screening.
